Authentic British warmth from farm to home. This king-size pure wool blanket begins with yarn from our Devon Closewool sheep, which is sent to Yorkshire where it's woven with other British wools in the distinctive colours that celebrate the natural transformation of Herdwick wool throughout the sheep's lifetime. The careful processing enhances the natural qualities of British wool while creating colour combinations that complement both modern and traditional interiors.
Herdwick Colour Journey
Herdwick sheep undergo a fascinating natural colour transformation throughout their lives. When Herdwick lambs are born, they have a jet-black coat. As they grow, this coat gradually lightens through several stages:
- Within the first year, they lose the black face and legs, the face gradually goes white, you can get some that look like they are wearing a mask as the colour changes (think Mask of Zorro!) and the black wool on the body begins to fade to a dark chocolate brown colour.
- By the time they reach 2-3 years of age, the wool continues lightening to a grey or "hoar frost" colour.
- Adult Herdwick sheep (around 4 years old) ultimately develop a light silver-grey fleece, though the head and legs remain white.
This natural colour change is genetic and unique to the Herdwick breed. It's this distinctive transformation that has directly inspired the colouring of our blanket, allowing us to celebrate the natural beauty of the Herdwick's life journey in each throw. The subtle gradations of colour in our blanket reflect the changing wool colours throughout the sheep's lifetime, creating depth and interest while maintaining an authentic connection to the sheep themselves.
Exceptional Warmth Without Weight
Pure wool produces naturally insulating fibres that retain heat while allowing airflow, creating a blanket that keeps you warm without feeling heavy or restrictive. The unique properties of this wool regulate temperature effectively during all seasons.
Superior Craftsmanship
Every stage from sheep to finished blanket happens within Britain. Our wool travels from our Salcombe farm to Yorkshire's historical mills, where it undergoes worsted spinning. This technique combs the fibres to ensure perfect alignment, creating stronger, finer yarn that's Z-spun and S-twisted. The finished yarn then goes to Bristol where master weavers create each blanket on traditional looms, maintaining complete British production that supports local expertise.
Sustainable Heritage Built for Generations
Our Herdwick sheep are a traditional British breed suited to our local landscape. By raising this heritage breed we support agricultural biodiversity while creating superior blankets with excellent insulation properties and durability. The Herdwick breed has proven its durability through a century of use in challenging weather. Our careful processing preserves the wool's natural strength, while expert weaving creates a dense, hard-wearing structure. The result is a blanket that maintains its shape, warmth and character through years of daily use, actually improving with age.
